No matter how much we try to control it, Life is an unpredictable journey. It’s like attempting to grasp water with our bare hands—no matter how tightly we hold on, it slips through our fingers. The truth is, we don’t always know what’s coming next, and often, we can’t stop what happens.
Consider our careers. We pour our time, energy, and effort into building a secure future, following the so-called “rules” of success. But even the best-laid plans can go awry. Markets crash. Businesses close. New leadership steps in, and long-standing teams are dismantled. Anybody remember when a “government job” was a pseudonym for security? Depending on which government agency you are affiliated with, that idea could be nothing more than a distant memory. Job security as a whole is a fading concept. With the rapid evolution of technology, the career you thought you’d have for life can vanish overnight. Perhaps you’ve worked tirelessly for a promotion, only to see it handed to someone else. Financial security can disappear in a moment. Relationships can falter. You plan, you strive, you hope—and yet, life has a way of pulling the rug out from under you.
Disaster often strikes without warning. It’s as if life insists on reminding us that we have far less control than we like to believe. We don’t know when hardship will come; we only know that it can happen at any moment.
Healthy living is another example. Some people dedicate themselves to disciplined exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate rest. Yet, even with such dedication, the outcome is never guaranteed. You may be in peak physical condition today, only to be blindsided by an unexpected illness tomorrow. It’s like running a race, only to realize halfway through that the finish line has moved—or worse, the entire race has been canceled. In life, there are no guarantees. We may have dreams for tomorrow, but tomorrow itself is never promised.
The future remains a mystery. No matter how many forecasts we consult or patterns we study, we can never be certain of what lies ahead. The unexpected lurks around every corner, like a game of hide-and-seek. Will we make it through the day unscathed? Will our plans unfold as we hope? Only God knows.
Dwelling on an uncertain future can leave us paralyzed with fear. We can become so consumed with what might go wrong that we forget to live in the present and embrace the life we were meant to live.
We often rely on the people around us. We tell ourselves that even if all else fails, at least we have family and friends who will stand by our side. After all, we share common struggles, as the Bible reminds us: “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man” (1 Corinthians 10:13). It is comforting to know we are not alone.
But here’s a hard truth: even those we trust most can let us down. The spouse who vowed to stay may leave. The friends we counted on may disappear in our time of need. Even the parents who loved us unconditionally may pass away, leaving us feeling lost and alone. Sometimes, life makes us feel like we’re walking this road by ourselves.
Uncertain fortunes, uncertain futures, and uncertain relationships can make life feel unstable—like a house built on sand. But here’s the good news: even in the midst of all this uncertainty, we can find peace. We can experience the calm assurance that everything will be okay, no matter what happens or who stays by our side. How? Because our hope is in something—or rather, Someone—who never changes.
Jesus is our Rock. He is the steady foundation that will never crumble. He is our refuge when life overwhelms us. He is the peace that guards our hearts, even when the storms rage around us. In a world full of uncertainty, we can stand firm on His promise that we will be okay. When everything else fails, we can always turn to the Rock.
Psalm 18:2 declares, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
That Rock will never change its mind about you. That Rock will never stop protecting or providing for you. When life’s storms shake your world, the unshakable Stone that is your Savior will remain your steadfast foundation. You can always depend on Him.
So while we may not know what tomorrow holds, we can rest in the certainty that God holds tomorrow. Rest on that Rock. Rest in the assurance that He is a firm foundation that will never fail.
