When life feels like drought, crushing, or fire,
God is not destroying you.
He is concentrating you.
The harsh conditions you face are forming an oil;
dense, deep, and destined, that only your story can carry.
Blessing Is Never Light
In Hebrew, berakhah-blessing, comes from barak, a word meaning to kneel, to bend, to bear weight. Blessing in Scripture is never hollow. It is substantial, shaped under pressure, and carried with reverence.
Blessings have weight.
Blessings require strength.
Blessings require waiting.
“God doesn’t hand out hollow blessings. He forms heavy ones.”
Oil: What Harsh Places Produce
Oil reveals God’s process. A raw olive is pale, bitter, and unimpressive. But under pressing, crushing, and weight, something golden emerges. Scientific research confirms the spiritual truth Scripture models: The richest olive oils often come from trees grown in harsh, stressed, or drought-stricken conditions.
● Drought concentrates nutrients and increases certain antioxidants.
● Thin, rocky soil forces roots deeper, strengthening the tree.
● High altitude produces oils with longer shelf life and better fatty acid profiles.
● Environmental stress increases the depth and density of the oil.
This is science for our souls. These agricultural studies (Brás et al., Horticulturae, 2024; Olive Oil Times, 2019) show that olive trees facing drought, altitude, and stress often produce oil with higher quality and richer compounds. Therefore, messages of withstanding strength emerge as lessons applicable to our lives. What should weaken the tree actually makes the oil stronger. What should diminish the fruit makes the oil more valuable. The harshness becomes holy. Within our spirit is the same. Pressure sent from sin aims to crush and destroy but God’s protective and boomerang Grace produces potency, a weapon to rise in the crushing.
The Harsh Conditions God Works With Are Personal
Every person’s conditions are different, not by accident, but by assignment. The forces of good and evil are are constant war but God told Jeremiah: “For I know the plans I have for YOU…” Jeremiah 29:11. It’s a personal journey. Not one-size-fits-all plans. God’s plans. His and Our story. Our cultivation. His and Our oil. And God gives you permission to call your season what it is:
● Harsh.
● Painful.
● Crushing.
● Difficult.
● Real.
Naming your pain does not diminish your faith, it aligns your honesty with the God of Genesis who hovered over chaos before He ever called anything good.
“You can name your crushing because it is becoming oil.”
Genesis: The Spirit Who Waits With Us
Before creation unfolded, Scripture says:
“And the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the deep.” Genesis 1:2.
The Spirit did not rush. The Spirit did not panic. The Spirit took His post like a watchman over chaos. This is patience not as passivity, but patience as protection, patience as presence, patience as power. The Spirit hovers over your harsh place the same way. Explore some:
● Old Testament Waitings with Weight
Daniel: Waiting Through Invisible Warfare-(Daniel 10:12-13)
He waited 21 days while angels battled unseen.
The delay was not denial, it was weight-building.
The Hebrew Boys: Waiting in the Fire-(Daniel 3:16-27)
They waited in flames meant to kill them. But the weight of the fire was overtaken by the weight of God’s presence.
Sarah: Waiting for an Impossible Promise-(Genesis 18:10-14; 21:1-2)
God asked her, “Is anything too hard, too heavy, for the Lord?” Her blessing carried generational weight.
● New Testament Waitings with Heavy Miracles
The Woman With the Issue of Blood-(Mark 5:25-34)
Twelve years of shame and waiting. Her blessing came with the weight of every year behind it.
The Gadarene Demoniac-(Mark 5:1–20)
The weight of madness bowed to the weight of Christ’s deliverance.
The Syrophoenician Woman-(Matthew 15:21-28)
She waited through silence, dismissal, and barriers. Her persistence pulled a miracle across cultural borders.
Jesus in Gethsemane: No Other Way-(Matthew 26:36-39; Luke 22:42-43)
An angel strengthened Him for the only path forward. Salvation came not around the crushing, but in and through it.
So, the question is, how Do We Wait Through Harsh Conditions? Fighting Through Doubt to Believe Again. Waiting is emotional. Waiting is circular. Waiting is holy, and hard. So how do we wait without losing heart?
STEP 1 – BELIEVE: Connect Beyond the Pain (Acts 16:31)
Our base point on this journey is to start with belief. People who don’t know God sense “something out there.” And that’s ok. But we know His Name:
● Yahweh – I AM
● Elohim – Creator
● Jehovah Shalom – Peace
● Jehovah Rapha – Healer
● El Roi – the God Who Sees Me
Belief anchors you when emotions cannot.
STEP 2 – BE RESHAPED: Let God Build Capacity – (Isaiah 64:8)
Waiting is not punishment, it is reshaping. Like olives in drought produce richer oil, your soul under pressure is being deepened. Like clay on the Potter’s wheel, you are being stretched, refined, sealed in fire. Like popcorn in a child’s bare hands, you cannot carry abundance
without a cup. Waiting forms the cup. Waiting enlarges the vessel. Waiting prepares you to hold
what you once could only watch.
STEP 3 – BE TRANSFORMED: Carry the Blessing’s Weight – (Romans 12:2; Philippians 2:5)
I long for the day my feet stand on sand again, gravity bracing me, creation grounding me, and God’s presence strengthening me. What is heavy to others will be holy to me because God has formed me to carry it.
“Greater is He that is in you…” 1 John 4:4. The Holy Spirit carries the weight within me and through me. So this gives the best permission to Name Your Crushing:
Name your crushing.
Name your ache.
Name your fear.
Name your fire.
Name your ashes.
Name your sorrow.
Name your storm.
Because Scripture says: “Weeping may endure for a night…” Psalm 30:5. Weeping may endure, but it cannot stay. There is a morning appointed.
“He gives beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning.” Isaiah 61:3 So name your ashes. Name your middle chapters. Write the vision, all of it. Name your crushing because it is becoming oil.
A Thanksgiving I Didn’t Expect
On Thanksgiving Day, from a hospital bed, I tried to write a gratitude post. God whispered: “Not yet.” He wasn’t after a paragraph, He was after pressing. He deepened my color. Thickened my oil. Strengthened my vessel. I thought I was waiting for surgery. But I was waiting for transformation. He wasn’t withholding blessing, He was enlarging my capacity to carry it.
Finally, I have been gazing at the ocean walk which I can’t wait to take again. When I imagine standing again, feet in wet sand, earth bracing me, the ocean breathing with me, I feel this truth: Creation braces me. The Creator strengthens me. Grounded in creation, strengthened by God. Blessing weighted, presence holding me. And so I end with this truth: I am becoming the vessel God can trust with the weight of His blessing.
