Don’t Let the Devil “Hamburglar” You!

Martin County deputies say they’ve identified and arrested a man accused of breaking into two restaurants and cooking himself some food in Jensen Beach, Florida. Police report that Patrick Benson, 34, has been charged with burglary, grand theft and attempted burglary. Benson broke into the restaurants, fired up the grill and cooked himself a hamburger before stealing the safe at a Wendy’s. Deputies say he helped himself to more money—and food–at another restaurant.

You can’t make this stuff up! Not only was it bad enough that this criminal broke into the store and stole their money—but then he stopped long enough to make himself some chow! His disrespect for the business and the law was thorough and comprehensive.

Satan: The Ultimate Hamburlgar!

When I was a kid I remember going once a week to our local McDonald’s restaurant where me, my two brothers, and my dad would enjoy discounted hamburgers and spend time at the playground. This playground was magical! We would play on it for hours! Each piece of the playground was based on one of the McDonald’s gang (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyojFOr-FUI). I played on each piece, but my favorite was the tower of the character named “Hamburglar,” who used to steal hamburgers during the old McDonald’s commercials. I would take my hamburgers and climb up in the tower and eat them while peering over my “kingdom”!

I had good memories of the Hamburglar, but honestly, he’s supposed to represent someone who is sneaky, only has bad intentions, and steals. He’s not a good guy—and neither is the devil.

Satan is real—and so is the constant battle for your soul! Just as God has an amazing plan for your life, so does Satan. But his plan isn’t so amazing. He just wants you dead! Satan knows that if he can get you to pay for your own sins, then he won’t have to.

Here are some more descriptions of who he is and what his goals are:

  • “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10a, ESV).
  • “He [Satan] was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44, ESV).
  • “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8, ESV).
  • “And he [God] seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years” (Revelation 20:2, ESV).
  • “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12, ESV).

Choose Wisely

Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God knows the plans He has for you, and they are “ . . . plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (ESV). If you don’t actively choose God, you automatically choose Satan—and trust me, you don’t want him in charge.

So, today, make the right choice. Choose God, don’t let the devil “Hamburglar” you. The only thing you want taken from you is your guilt and sin.
